You can show the out-of-stock variants by adding an availability date. In Gold R12, there is a new feature so customers can signup to be notified when the itme is back in stock.
I’m leaving the status of this request as “under review” because we would like to add a store option to show out-of-stock variants without the dependancy on the availability date.

This would be great with an inventory module. The ability to take a tablet to the shelf and check in merchandise from our vendors would be great.

This is a good idea. I would like it done the same way as the current preview order mouse-over. It is the magnifying glass icon on the order dashboard. It shows a preview of the order by just mousing over that icon. I would like to see the order notes added to this icon's preview, or add a new column for a similar icon for order notes.

I like the idea of this with one request. Please allow the site-wide setting to also be segmented by user groups. So because we have different pricing levels for group A and group B... we may like to add a site-wide discount of X% for group A and Y% for group B

Ryan's idea is solid. We should always show the products we sell to the customer, with an easy to see notice that it is out of stock.
